Notice Saulog Transit is buffed and shiny, while Saint Raphael was rusty and dusty. That's how these two bus companies presented themselves at the height of their competition. Students and Manila-bound workers vied for the best and shiniest Saulog. They beat other passengers by catching the bus coming in the city. By the time the bus turned around for Manila, they were full to the hilt. Since there were more passengers than buses, people crammed in filthy Saint Raphaels anyway.
The shiniest and fastest Saulog drivers became celebrities. I remember Brando. He was the fastest and had the slickest wheels, best humming engine. Hope to get a seat? In your dreams. Now if you were pretty and had the whitest Saint Scholastica uniform, then Brando might have reserved you a seat beside him so he could brush on your loins when he changed gears. Brando's Saulog bus was the place to see and be seen.
