i think it has to be the L teleconverter to work correctly. But it could also be that the 1.4x make it an f8 at 400mm and the 20D may not be able to handle it.

I have a 1.4x tamron, however it doesn't focus all the time. So I don't use it very often.

Holy Bejesus! Nice and close, great detail. I played with the 100-400 lens today as a matter of fact. I felt like a pro just holding it. Have you tried it with a 1.4 or 2x teleconverter?
