August0205

Wanda took me for a hike today where she found a nest of these guys the other day.
So we went to see how close of a look we could get.
This one let me get about 10 feet from it.
Now we are just tring to figure out what type of hawk this one is.

Wes, I think you may be right with it being the sharp shinned, because of the banding in the tail feathers. In this image you can just barely see the bands starting to show. But, I was confused by the way the bird looked in flight. Perhaps the immatures look different when flying, or I just didn't get as good of view as I thought I had. The sharp shins I have seen in flight out in the open looked different to Me. (shrug)

I just looked it up in the book, Aint NO way that bird is a Goshawk. The Goshawks ARE much bigger than this little fella. 20 inches plus!

back to the drawing board.

You would think from this shot that this is a bigger bid, however with how close I got to it this is only like 8 inches tall. I thought Goshawks where bigger.

Knowing where you hike, there are only a few birds that fly well through trees. I believe this is an immature Northern Goshawk. Wanda if you look at the merlins in your book look for the "tear streaks" they are not on this one, also merlins are small like kestrels. JSW

Both are really nice shots.

Wes, I have been searching through My bird books tonight and the closest thing I could find is a "merlin". . . not to be confused with a "merkin" . .. anyway, I think that's what it is. Otherwise known as a "pigeon hawk". It that aint what it is, then My book didn't have anything similar. Oh, and from what it said in the book, we did see some "immatures" as well as the older one down the trail just as we were leaving.

Thanks again for coming with Me on My hike. It's always so much more fun when I have someone to share the experience with. (happy smile)
