This is to notify you that our dear friend "What do you tell people about your new house" officially entered the big bit bucket in the sky, today March 17, 2004 at 12:22 pm. EST. His passing was marked by little fanfare but he sure did stir the pot during his short time here on earth. Eulogies may be posted here. No services are scheduled - however you are rquested to celebrate his life and passing at your neighborhood bar and grill, this evening at 7:00 pm EST. Celebrations may continue until the wee hours of the morning. Green Beer for Everyone. |

FWIW, I was born and raised in the South and I have never eaten
Red Eye Gravy. In fact, I have never seen Red Eye Gravy. BTW, real
biscuits are made with buttermilk.

I'm a Yankee and never heard of "red-eye" gravy before I met one of my brother's GFs. My family was vacationing together on Cape Cod and she got up (hangover and all!) and made breakfast, including said gravy. It was delicious! |

Country living - That thump thump thump is not Irish flu. I'ts
your heart trying to pump blood throught those arteries clogged with
stuff from the gravy, biscuits, ham, bacon and eggs. Mine does that
a lot.
Regarding Red Eye Gravy - reminds me of a joke I heard years ago. The story teller said they were so poor that the kids ate supper after everyone else. After the adults finished eating the wife hung what was left of the ham above the kitchen table and the kids got one biscuit a piece and "sopped" the shadow. |

Not yet. Lets talk more about biscuits and gravy. Im hungry. White gravy is made from flour, buttermilk and bacon drippings. In my humble opinion it is one of our nations finest gravies and a fine testament to our strong feelings for the departed. There, now were back on topic. |
I can always depend on this forum to give me a laugh when I
desperately need it -- we had a house fire in our temporary rental
Monday night (our umpteenth diaster in three years) -too busy
picking up the pieces (by myself without DH's help)to read or post
much - but Thanks for the saving grace. Luv you guys;)

Even though I'm a Yankee (but not a damned yankee!) I know how
to make biscuits, and not only do they have buttermilk, but should
have either White Lily or Martha White 'soft wheat' flour. And I
grew up on gravy of any color. With Depression era parents, gravy
was served at about every meal. Ever have weiner gravy? Now that I'm
"rich" -ROTFLOL - I can make white gravy with actual pieces of good
sage-seasoned sausage to eat on those biscuits. But gotta save some
biscuits for sorghum molasses.

My ancestors were Brits, and I adore Great Britain AND your food!!! Is that why another one of my favorite meals is beans and cornbread? And here I thought that was just my down home upbringin'. yep, we're all a little crazy here, but maybe not as much as we may be when this house building is over. Glad we still have a sense of humor for now. |

Sorry yoall, ate boiled peanuts today, and crawfish, now thats
some good eating, but will have country ham, biscuits and red eye
gravey tomorrow, are you sure this isn't the cooking forum? By the
way the Framers should get the house under roof tomorrow, DH solved
the too small hole for the too big window problem, not really sure
how but he did and the newest crisis is how big a cabnet does a
triple sink need, found guy that custom makes cabnets and he said
anything you want but need to know so will know where to frame up
window that framer left out, he is quite nicely going to go back and
put it in. Thanks for chuckles made my day.

I first heard of boiled peanuts when I was a little girl, living
in Texas at the time. A neighbor was from Tennessee and was always
wishing she had some boiled peanuts. I finally got to taste them
last spring at the National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburg
Tennessee. I loved them. Now, remember I like beans, which is sorta
what they tasted like to me. The guy who sold them to me at the
festival said he'd had a hard time cooking them because they have to
boil for several hours (outside at his wife's request), so he'd
start them when he got home from work and let them boil all night.
Trouble was, "the bears keep gettin' to 'em first". Don't know that
I liked 'em well enough to fight a bear for 'em, but they were good.
Love those crawfish too. Not much I don't like, ('cept liver, with
or without gravy.)
Oh, and they have the lower level (walk-out basement) of our house enclosed as of this evening. We were able to walk around on the deck and get the feel of what our house will be like. Exciting!! |
oh, i am so flattered so many are curious.... here we go...beans on toast recipe: 2 pieces of white bread (preferred good crust), toast them, and while still warm (important here because you want butter to melt in) spread liberally with a good butter, best beans here are Heinz vegetarian baked beans. heat up and pour right on top of toasts. season w/ salt & pepper. Bass could do, but if you want authentic..you do a lovely cup of tea with milk & sugar. AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHH fantastic! msetwin- great news... i'm jelous but v. happy for you, that must be so exciting! |

sirree. The National Cornbread Festival. I can top that, because
about 20 miles up the road from me they have the annual Turkey-Rama
Festival. Try to top that one. No Balled OR Burled Peanuts there,
just a whole lot of turkey.
And Nokeysyet, your description of the beans on toast is what I was really, really afraid it would be. I think I'll just take your word for the deliciosity of said treat. |
Sarahmakes6, I got you beat... where I live we celebrate spring
with the "Return of the Turkey Buzzards Festival" (they fly south
every Oct. and return middle March). Billy Bacon & The Forbidden
Pigs will be playing at the local watering hole. No boiled peanuts,
but lots of pinto beans, and good ole Texas barbecue... and no
cornbread, but lots of tortillas.
The buzzards are highly regarded around here. |
we used to have the annual Kudzu ball but it has sadly been canceled.The cornbread festival is fortunately only a half hour away. Beans on toast...might be good with a liberal dose of gravy...mmm...gravy. |

know, I probably won't sleep tonite either.
Nat'l Cornbread Festival sounds fun. White beans, cornbread and a good white onion. Bet that town smells wonderful at festival time. I'll take my cornbread made in black iron skillets. Same for gravy. No good cooked in modern cookware. As most of you are aware, black iron skillets cook best if their origin can be traced back at least to your great grandmother. Anything younger that this is an abomination in the true Southern kitchen. |

We have mule days here. And collard festivals. And the boiled
peanuts ? Don't have to go far at all for those - they sell 'em in
the grocery store (canned goods section-top shelf).
btw - There is no such thing as good ole Texas barbeque ! The ONLY barbeque is North Carolina barbeque !!! Don't forget the cole slaw and brunswick stew and hush puppies. |

TNLady, Last year the Food Network telecast the National
Cornbread Cookoff. I won third place, so I was on Food Network -
Great American Festivals. And my everyday iron skillet was my great
gramma's, but I had to season and break in a Lodge for the contest
(a requirement). I'm trying to qualify again this time. If I make it
maybe I'll see you there!
Hard Head, one of my favorite bands used to be Timothy Pee and the Outhouse Three, so sounds like Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs might be cut from the same "silk purse". Oh, and we went out to home site this afternoon and lo and behold, the guys were working! Snapping chalk lines on the floor/deck for the walls to begin framing them tomorrow. It's beginning to look like a real house. hehe |
Brunswick Stew is a traditional favorite with Southern barbecue.
It has very deep Southern roots, and you'll find it almost always

Some of the special features on the news around here revolved around Carolina Panthers players comparing NC barbeque with TX barbeque. I can bring my skillet if you need an extra - not my grannie's (she was a bohemian Chicagoan!) but it dates back to '76 when I was cooking on a wood stove on my Hippie farm. It totally grosses out my (also yankee) Mom - so we know it's just perfect!! I use to cater, manage, and misc. food service - I'll come be your trusty aide!! The Hoe (HO - HO!) cakes are great for camping as they fry
instead of bake:
1 Cup Yellow Corn Meal (Yellow but not rough stone-ground) Mix first 3 ingredients (you can mix and bag at home - then tote). Add boiling water and stir thoroughly (this softens the corn meal). Add egg and mix thoroughly. Drop by serving size spoonful into 1/2 inch of medium hot oil (I prefer corn oil for these but any will do). Cook until lightly to med. browned on one side - turn over and repeat - drain. You're done - awesome for breakfast or dinner!! DH likes just butter - the kids and I like syrup or honey on top... Make sure your oil is hot enough but not too hot - it takes practice!! TNLady |

Over on the kitchen forum they sometimes do some sort of a swap where people in different parts of the country send "gift baskets" to people in other parts of the country. I'm fairly new to gardenweb, so I didn't get in on their last swap, but it might be fun to do a swap with people on the build a home board. stained - DIY - PITA to do but was pleased with the results. Not
cold. I seldom go down there - except to carry more pizza, snacks,
biscuits and gravy down there for DD and friends.

Last night had dinner, excuse me, supper at local B and G. Ran in to someone I hadn't seen for a couple years and started talking about this and that and the conversation came around to - you guessed it - FOOD. He mentioned another acquaintance who had recently purchased a restaurant and had begun opening for breakfast. Said he and a few of his cronies were "assisting" him with the fineries of breakfast preparation - ie. how they liked their coffee, eggs etc. Then he mentioned "GRAVY" and our 14 yr old daughter said "Well, the only place in town that I eat gravy is at ???????'s." Then proceeded to explain the differences in gravy around town. She had no clue what was going on here on this forum. I stifled the laugh until we got outside - I could see myself trying to explain this post to an outsider. Probably would have been committed. Anyway - the gravy stars they are aligning. Noticed the "big dipper" in the sky last night and realized the only reason for it is -- there must be gravy in heaven. M I Z Z O U |

Mizzou- you're killing me! I may just start a new religion based
on the idea that the big dipper is full of gravy just waiting for
the faithful to arrive. The adherants to the church of the handsome
prophet shall spend eternity being paddled around in gravy boats and
eating deep fried food, Laughing hysterically at anyone who thinks
