Below are some photos of hostas infected with Virus X. The most obvious signs are puckered, almost bubbly looking sections of leaves, odd mottling, 'bleeding' across the veins, and light spots where they shouldn't be. Infected hosta can have one, a few, or all of these symptoms. If you find one of yours is infected, dig it out and dipose of it. Wash the spade used to dig it out with 10% bleach solution, and use a scrubby or brush to ensure all the plant sap is removed. Do not plant a new hosta in the same hole unless ALL of the old roots are gone. Another option is to leave the hole empty and open for a month so any remaining roots die. If you suspect one of your hosta is infected, but are not sure, dig it out and put it in a pot to quarantine it. Don't forget to sterilize your spade after digging it out!
