The Good;
Excellent condition for a 1995 car with 123,200 miles! Paint is shiny and all original matching panels. Interior leather in excellent condition with only minor wear showing on the manual Vader front seats - I never slide across the bolster as this is a weak point with the cars. Wheels are nearly perfect with only minor nicks and scratches. I continue to get complements on the car and then the people are surprised its 21 years old.
I bought the car in Aug 2000 and have performed most of the maintenance since that time since these cars are so easy to work on. Most of its life was spent in a garage at work during the day and at home at night but this car is not a garage queen. It has been driven almost every day in the summers with sporadic use in the winter up until the last few years where it hasnt been driven much hence the reason to sell. It has been driven and maintained by an enthusiast, using Mobile One oil, Redline Fluids for the transmission and differential and only BMW coolant. It currently has ATE synthetic brake fluid.
The BMW E36 M3 is a truly affordable enthusiast car. It has rock-solid reliability, BMW build quality and performance in a package that is easy to live with day in and day out. (Ive lived with this one for 15 years and Im only selling it to purchase a car for our vacation condo in Hawaii). You can put four adult people in the car and take a trip and the split folding back seat allows you to carry long loads. While its HP isnt up to todays high performance cars, it has comparable handling at a fraction of the cost. A September 1997 Car and Driver feature, The Best-Handling Car for More Than $30,000 crowned it number one against the Porsche Boxster, 911 Carrera S, Corvette, Dodge Viper GTS, Toyota Supra Turbo, Acura NSX-T and Ferrari F355! The M3 is a car that will not disappoint you.
Things I know that aren't 100%;
The sunroof doesn't pop up as far as it should. This happened approximately 2007 and hasn't changed since. All other functions work as they should.
The date button on the OBC does not work. Some pixels are also out internet repairs are easy to find.
It uses 1 qt oil approximately every 3000 miles. I usually add one qt between oil and filter changes.
Hood release is stiff but operates correctly
Front floor mats are probably ready for a replacement
One small hole in rear bumper about 1/2" in diameter.
LF fender was repainted in 2014 after a guy backed into me at the park and ride work expertly performed by Haury's in Lake City.
Mods:
Euro floating brake rotors in front
Euro headlights with angel eyes
M-Roadster short shift kit installed (maintains 100% BMW parts)
Metal thermostat housing and metal impellor water pump to correct known weak points in the E36 cooling system
2003 E36 trailing arm bushings replaced with OEM with reinforcements to reduce suspension movement and premature wear of the bushings.
In 2004 Adare Motorsports replaced the engine with a modified S50 with more HP than stock.
Car miles: 71000, Engine miles: 76000
Schrick cams
BMP head gasket (this gasket prevents the head gasket weakness of the OEM, which is a weak point in the S50)
New valve retainers, springs, etc.
Underdrive pulleys
Baffled oil pan which helps greatly in preventing oil starvation
Conforti cold air intake
Euro mass airflow sensor
Higher flow fuel injectors (I probably knew the rating at the time - 24lb sticks in my head)
Conforti chip appropriate for the engine mods (I have the original chip)
UUC Stage II lightweight flywheel
M5 clutch
New radiator hoses
Front sub-frame reinforcements
New lower control arms
Urethane lower control arm bushings
New Guibo
In 2005 Adare Motorsports installed Dinan Stage III suspension;
Dinan Springs
Single adjustable Dinan-valved Koni shocks
Dinan adjustable sway bars
Needless to say
