Secret Waterfall 1

It's hard to believe that the pristine beauty we saw today is only about a mile from a well traveled western North Carolina road. That's a mile as the crow flies. I'm sorry I can't tell you where this spot is, but I'll tell you it's in the Nantahala National Forest. The day began rainy and as we drove towards our intended parking spot, the fog rolled in. The hike isn't a hike - it's a total bushwhack in some of the thickest tangled mass of rhododendron and whatever else was growing and had fallen. Wading in the creek made the going somewhat easier. It wasn't very long before we came across a stand of large hemlocks looming on the fog. At just over 1/4 mile down the creek we could see the land falling off rapidly. The vegetation turned to a thick mass of dog hobble, but we used this to our advantage on the steep slippery mountainside away from the top of the waterfall. We could tell there was a waterfall tucked back in there and parts of it came into view as we swung around towards the base. It's a beauty! Sphagnum moss covered the rocks and old logs. There was no sign at all of anyone disturbing the moss in quite a while and we tread as lightly as we could.
