Courthouse Falls

This was freaky. My pal Wendy was in town and I decided to take her to Courthouse Falls via the Summey Cove Trail (since FR140 is still closed!). We drove up to the Parkway first and on the way over to Hwy 215 it started raining very hard, especially near Devil's Courthouse, headwater area for Courthouse Creek. By the time we got to the trailhead, the rain had let up. About 15 minutes up the trail, it started raining again and continued to rain for the last 45 minutes of the hike. The trail became a small creek, but we made it down to the base of the falls without any problem. We were already soaked, so we headed out to the big rock in the middle of the creek and plopped down on the big rock to enjoy the view. Water levels were a little high, but the water was still white. Too white for a decent shot and since it was raining I didn't get the camera out. About 45 minutes later, the rain began to let up and we decided to head out. The water flow had increased noticably, but nothing to worry about. As we were getting our stuff together, Wendy looked up again and said to look. The water was turning brown and volume was increasing rapidly. In less than 15 seconds, it was time to get off the rock. In less than a minute, the creek was a swirling brown torrent all around the rock. If you've been there, you'll know the rock. At the top of the stairs, I pulled the camera out and snapped a quickie. Here's a shot from earlier this year - taken from that rock in the middle of the creek - http://www.pbase.com/waterfallrich/image/61243593

Wow...
Guess that's how the swimming hole gets so deep.
