March 4 - waterfalls on Little Cove Creek

I've made a couple of trips to Florida since I last posted, but instead of posting pictures here I started a Birds gallery and a Bok Tower Gardens gallery if you are interested in looking at some of the shots I took. It's been a few weeks since I was out in the woods around here and I needed to get out. Bernie was up for a hike and we decided to check out 3 waterfalls that Jack and Andy found a few weeks back on Little Cove Creek in the Green River State Gamelands area. This is the same area as Big and Little Bradley Falls and we parked in the same place as you would if you were going up Cove Creek to Big Bradley Falls. From Hendersonville, head south on I-26 and get off at exit 59 at Saluda. Turn left on Holbert Cove Rd (SR1142) and turn almost immediately to the left on to Green River Cove Rd after crossing under the interstate. This road is extremely curvy and steep until it gets to river level. Drive about 3.5 miles and look for a parking area on the left. Just ahead on the right will be a campground and tube rental place. Walk up and into that, bear to the left up the road with the tube storage building on the left and continue up to the gate. (Since it was out of season, we drove into the campground and up to the gate at the newly expanded parking area. I would advise not to do this hike during hunting season - turkey and deer - unless you do it on a Sunday.

The hike/bushwhack to see all 3 waterfalls is about a 5 mile round trip and should only be attempted by experienced off trail explorers. Begin the hike at the gate and walk the gravel road for about a mile to an old building. The trail to Big Bradley bears to the right, but you want to stay on the road. Continue to the crossing of Cove Creek. We managed to rock hop over, but be prepared to get your feet wet. The rocks are extremely slippery here! After crossing, continue until the road ends in some fields. At our visit, corn had been planted and left for the wildlife, but I'm not sure what you will find later in the year. We stayed to the right here and continued through the corn, then into the woods (no path here) for a short distance until we came to Little Cove Creek. After crossing the creek, we continued on until we picked up an old logging road and followed it up the creek. After a bit, the road began bearing to the left, but we continued through the open woods up the creek to the first waterfall.
