Cindy came back to the mountains this week end to help me celebrate the Independence Day week end. And what better way to begin the celebration than to search for a waterfall neither one of us had seen. The first I had heard of this waterfall was from the guys that helped me when my previous vehicle slid off the road 2 winters ago while coming down from a frozen Max Patch Mountain. A recent picture post of the falls on Facebook got me interested in finding it. Cindy and I had already decided to be at Max Patch for a sunset this evening, but I figured we'd have enough time to look for the waterfall beforehand.
We got on the road mid afternoon - hit I-40 heading west out of Asheville. I knew the interstate was down to 1 lane at exit 7 which is the Harmon Den/Max Patch exit and I figured it would be a bottleneck with the Holiday traffic. This proved to be true, because when we came back that way at 10:30PM, the west bound lanes were backed up from Exit 7 for 5 miles! The east bound lanes were flowing smoothly. I knew there was a back way to Max Patch if I got off at exit 24 for Hwy 209, but I had never been. I had approximate mileages and turns jotted down on a piece of paper and Cindy proved to be an excellent co-pilot, helping me find the way.
