January 3 - Cane Creek, SC

Since I was still up in Lake Toxaway on Saturday, I called Bernie to see if he was up to another hike - and he was. He had been scoping out some more areas in the Eastatoe area of upstate SC, so we decided on Cane Creek. A ranger had told him of a waterfall up the creek a ways. This is a fairly easy off trail adventure with a couple of difficult places. We accessed the area from the end of Mill Creek Rd which is off of Cleo Chapman Rd. On Mill Creek Rd, drive about 1.5 miles to the end where there is a new home on the left. Continue a short distance straight past the house and park at the 3 red gates without blocking any of them. 2 are straight ahead, the way to Cane Creek is the one on the left. Walk down this road for a little over 1/4 mile to an intersection and turn right. Walk another 1/4 - the trail will narrow and cross a small creek that may or may not have water in it. Continue to the next bigger creek which is Cane Creek. The 2nd waterfall is just over a mile up.

Cane Creek is a nice creek. You'll follow an old railroad bed most of the way, but it crosses the creek a few times and you'll need to know how to look for it and get around the tricky places. The reason I posted this picture is because there are a lot of the rare Oconee Bells in places. They bloom in late winter, but the foliage stays a nice green all year around.
