November 22 - Chattooga River, SC

It was tempting to head back to Max Patch on Friday. Forecast called for more snow and the radar was showing it. I wasn't very excited about battling 25+mph winds again, so I wussed out and headed up to Lake Toxaway for the week end. For our Saturday hike, Bernie suggested Big Bend Falls on the Chattooga River in SC. I had never been and it made sense given the lack of water in the streams. Access is off of Hwy 107 in SC - not too far from the NC border. Parking for the Big Bend Trail is the same for Miuka Falls - the area on the left just south of Cherry Hill Recreation Area. The Big Bend Trail is across Hwy 107 and is marked. We cheated and turned right on Big Bend Rd which is a narrow forest road that requires a high clearance vehicle in several places. If you dare, drive 1.6 miles down this and park in the few places that look like people have parked there. The Big Bend Trail kind of parallels the road, so look for some fainter feeder trails that lead down to the trail, then turn right to head to the river.

Big Bend Falls is down river. It's only maybe 15-20' high, but a nice little falls. The side trails down for a view are really steep - this one took us to the top of the falls. This is just looking across the upper shelf.
