Day 13 Marc-André Gougeon-Lalonde

Master - n - pieces

I didn't know Marc-André Gougeon-Lalonde personally, but his story touched me deeply.

While on Tour of "Le Labo", a centre where youths 16-30 with social, psychological or
substance dependencies in Gatineau/Hull can be creative without any prejudices,
a very special story was told of a boy whom the volunteers at the centre loved dearly.

Marc-André Gougeon-Lalonde

He suffered from Schizophrenia.

One day, Marc-André didn't show up at the centre where he enjoyed working with
mixed-media art supplies. The volunteers later found out of his suicide (August 2010).
The centre reached-out to the family and told them of the "Marc-André" they knew...

(edited according to family members information)

The volunteers invited the family to come visit the centre and see some of
Marc-André's "Masterpieces". When the family visited.. You can imagine it was emotional.

The photo above is a photo of Marc-André and a ceramic mural he was working on.
It stands about 6 feet tall. Some of the pieces were accidentally knocked-off during
the construction to add the loft you can see above the artwork.

Unfortunately, life became too difficult for Marc-André and this piece will forever remain...
...a broken reminder.

I am his godmother! I miss him each and every day, but I am at peace with the decision he made to end his suffering. I take comfort in knowing he no longer has to struggle each day, trying so hard as he did to cope with life. His mental suffering was unbearable and I was very often first-hand witness to it. I have on a table a big piece of ceramic from his master piece, beside his picture and candles that I light often. He was a pure, loving soul and has taught many people the lesson of tolerance for mental health. I love him dearly and he is with me always.

Marc-André is my cousin's son. We were deeply hurt when we found out that he took his own life, however, we know that Marc-André is in a better place right now peacefully watching over his family and friends without suffering! I admire his beautiful family for their openness in teaching us all about mental health and I also admire the time that is taken to show everyone his wonderful art work. Bravo Marc-André, quel talent!

I am his god-mother, Marc-André was a son to me. I would like to comment that his family did know that he visited the Lab frequently. We heard of it from him. We visited this wonderful centre only after his death. While he lived, we respected that it was his and his alone. thank you so much for making his masterpiece recognized, it now officially bears his name, as it should. Respectfully, Suzanne Gougeon

He was such an amazing artist. And, died much too soon. Thank you for the story about him, here. Such a loss!

What stunning artwork and what a loss he is. Stories such as this should help to sweep away any prejudice which exists towards people with any sort of Mental Health issues. I hope that his work is preserved as a reminder of this lost talent.
