At an elevation of 2,430 meters (7,970 ft), Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel located in the Andes Mountain of southern Peru. It is situated above a bow of the Urubamba River, which surrounds the site on three sides. The city sits in a saddle between the two mountains Machu Picchu in the south and Huayna Picchu (or Wayna Pikchu) in the north.
