There are two main trails down from the south Rim to the Colorado River. One is the Bright Angel Trail and another is the South Kaibab Trail. Personally, I think the South Kaibab Trail is a better choice for a day hike. It goes along the ridge rather than a side canyon so that views along the trail are more expansive.
We turned back after a rest at Cedar Point. The round trip is about 3-4 miles with 1,200 ft change in elevation. It usually takes 2-4 hours for the round trip hike.
