The entrance to the Carlsbad Caverns is at the top of a mesa at 4,400ft in elevation. The elevation of the plain below the mesa is about 3,600 ft. The floor of the caverns is almost the same as elevation as the plain. Guadalupe Mountains can be seen from a distance on the right side of this picture.
