Etched meticulously into the limestone blocks of the Polygonal Wall, thousands of ancient Greek inscriptions, dated from 3rd to 1st centuries BC, cover the massive retaining structure below the Temple of Apollo in Delphi. The vast majority are legal acts documenting the manumission (liberation) of enslaved people, who were symbolically sold to the god Apollo to secure their permanent freedom.
