Radiant Madonna

view map

Suspended elegantly in the monumental High Gothic choir of Aachen Cathedral is the Strahlenkranzmadonna (Radiant Madonna). This brilliant, two-sided golden sculpture was carved by artist Jan van Stevensweert in 1524. It is perfectly framed by the towering 85-foot-tall (26 meters) stained-glass windows of the Gothic Choir Hall—an architectural marvel so flooded with color and light that locals call it the "Glass House of Aachen". Below this very spot rests the golden tomb of Emperor Charlemagne himself!

A brilliant capture ! The sculpture is strikingly captivating by itself, also surprisingly harmonious with the whole stained glass background. ~VVVVV+++~
