South Face of Cologne Cathedral. Built in the High Gothic style, the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is distinguished by its enormous twin towers, which rise about 157 meters (515 feet), making them among the tallest church towers in the world. Construction began in 1248 to house the relics of the Three Kings, but work was interrupted for centuries and the cathedral was finally completed in 1880.
