Completed in 1903, Pont Adolphe was named after Adolphe, Grand Duke of Luxembourg. At the time of its construction, its massive stone arch was considered an engineering achievement and one of the largest masonry arches in the world. The bridge spans the Pétrusse Valley and connects the historic upper city with newer districts that expanded beyond the old fortifications after Luxembourg ceased being a fortress city in the 19th century.
