These hills in the Tepees point are part of the Blue Mesa Member of the Chinle Formation, dating back approximately 220 to 225 million years to the Late Triassic Period. The distinct colors are the result of different minerals; iron, manganese, and other trace elements were deposited as the landscape evolved from a lush tropical environment into an arid one.
