Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap which lies atop the Katla caldera. Katla and nearby Eyjafjallajökull (last eruption in 2010) are among the most active volcanos in Iceland. These eruptions deposited significant amounts of ash onto Solheimajokull and nearby glaciers, creating striking black-and-white images like this.
