Built in 1892, Fram was specially designed to withstand being frozen into Arctic and Antarctic ice. It was used by Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup, and Roald Amundsen on major polar expeditions, including Amundsen’s successful voyage to the South Pole (1910–1912).
