The original castle was built in 1602-1608. The castle faces the Seto Inland Sea and is one of three "Castles on the sea" in Japan. Most buildings in the castle ground was destroyed after the Meiji Restoration. The current buildings were rebuilt between 1980 to 1990 with the original walls and moats. The status of Tōdō Takatora was erected in the courtyard to pay tribute to this famous castle designer who was involved with the design of Imabari Castle, Uwajima Castle and a few others.
