Walt was familiar with early cars, including a Model T. My dad would tell the story of how his father once drove back to the farm on his first try in one of these (or any other motor vehicle). My grandfather drove up the road to the farm, through the gate, and crashed into the side of the barn! When he staggered out, my father asked him what happened. Grandpa responded that he didn't know how to stop it any other way! Dad said Grandpa never drove a motor vehicle again!
