Leaving for Morzhovoi, we could see Amak from a window of our plane. The island was a few miles out into the Bering Sea from the radar site. The radar site was situated on a small peninsula of land leading to Grant Point, located between the Site and Amak. Interestingly, the lakes in this area were not saltwater. It was just amazing how much freshwater was present. I believed then that a person wouldn’t have needed to carry a canteen anywhere. In 1970 you could possibly have taken a drink right out of numerous lakes and streams. At least I wondered that.
The trip to the drop-off point was a real eye-opener. We flew low over pristine tundra and lakes framed by snow-capped mountain peaks, seeing herds of caribou and several Alaskan brown bear. Once we even flew very low to catch a better glimpse of two bears standing on their hind legs, fighting with each other. The vast expanse of the landscape and the variety of exotic wildlife were awesome sights!
