Search Radome, Grader and Loading Dock

Cold Bay, AK

The winding, unpaved road to town was surfaced with dirt and gravel. A yellow grader was necessary to keep the road relatively smooth for travel. Airmen from the radar site made frequent runs into the town of Cold Bay to retrieve mail. Postage arrived regularly from Anchorage via commercial airline. To receive mail, supplies and for various other reasons we made every effort to keep the road open. Our Commanding Officer, Lt Col John Quirk, really loved to operate that grader when it became necessary. Although we had Civil Engineering staff that graded the road, Col. Quirk liked to give the grader "a whirl" now-and-then.
One of our recreational vehicles was an old olive-green truck, a weapons carrier with a canvas cover. Every so often, we had civilian visitors from town. They sometimes parked their private vehicles in front of the motor pool. A white dome protected the search radar antenna from the elements.
