Runway and Plane

Cold Bay, AK

A gravel road approached Cold Bay from Grant Point and the radar station. These are my comments as recorded on audiotape from 1970: "Another sunny day. Ha, Ha! (I laughed on the tape because sunny days were extremely rare.) Off to the right is the main runway. One of the planes is sitting there getting ready to take off. Just to the left of center, at the horizon, can be seen the bay (Cold Bay), after which the town is named." Overcast skies, rain and high winds were the normal weather conditions here where the Aleutians begin.

My Dad TSgt or MSgt Samuel L Byrd Jr was stationed at this site in the early 70s for 1 year as a USAf SFS member. Does anyone remember him? If so it would be great to hear from you.
