A handful of years ago, I was walking through the gallery of the National World War I Museum when I glanced to my right and stopped dead in my tracks. What I was seeing was an exhibit of envelopes from that war that were decorated with sketches. They were meticulously drawn by an artist on the outside of mail sent to a loved one serving in the war. Wow, I thought! My dad was not the only person to come up with that idea. My father had sent illustrated mail to both my brother and myself while we were serving in the military back in the 1960's.
