The land is definitely not level in the vicinity of the Cockscomb (the formation in the mid ground) of Southern Utah. A natural barrier that runs for 240 km from southern Utah into Northern Arizona. This barrier proved difficult for early settlers to cross . To the extreme left of the image is one of the few natural breaks for hundreds of miles, hence a reason (along with reliable water) why this area was settled quickly.
