Baby Elephant Eating

Kirkmans Kamp - Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Baby elephant exercising its God Given talent for eating. I really hadn't comprehended how much of the day these animals spend masticating their food. Their digestive systems are very inefficient, and so they require large amounts of food to keep in the proper weight. Winter grasses aren't sufficient - they favor the bark of the Tambo tree, amongst other delicacies. When they eat grass, they rip large clumps from the sandy soil, then roll it back and forth with their trunks to knock the dirt off of it before eating it. I saw adults do it, then their young would practice. It was always four knocks of the grass before dining.

Their droppings are rich in seeds, and forests litteraly grow up behind them as they eat their way across large swaths of Africa.
