Today we visited the black township of Kayhelitsha (New Home). This was an area where under apartheid rule black people were either moved from various other areas or settled after they entered the country illegally. South Africa has an immigration issue of about the same size as the United states due to unrest in some neibourghing countries such as Zambia. Many of these families were settled into shacks. The government has made great strides at settling the shack dwellers into single family homes.
This young man was not in school due to teachers strikes (they also walked down the freeway in a line, tying up traffic for hours). He and his friends were happy to show us around, very friendly and absolutely fascinated with our digital cameras.
