I chanced on a group of five Surf Scoters close to shore feeding on a clam bed beneath the water. Once a capture is brought up, there is some manipulation, then they point their bill straight up and swallow it- whole! They have strong gizzards in their neck that crush the shell before reaching the stomach. This is a male with one just before it went down the hatch.
