Traditional Mae Hong Son Food at Pen Thima Restaurant Mae Sa Riang District DSCF0360.jpg

Pen Thima Restaurant, Amphoe Mae Sariang, Mae Hong Son Province

The dish on the lower left-hand corner is "ab moo," where "ab" is a dish not even known to my relatives from neighboring Chiang Mai. Like all other dishes pictured here, it was tasty. From my brief visit there, I think Mae Hong Son is justly known for delicious food! The dish at the center-top is a version of Lahb, I think, which is common in the North and the Northeast of Thailand. The dish on the right is Sai Ua, a sausage common in the North. The dish at the center-bottom is raw vegetables. The rest I'm not sure what they are, I guess roast pork and a soup of some sort. Please let me know if you know.

We have valuable information from Plai-auw Thongsawat:

Concerning “ab”, it’s a kind of grilled food wrap in banana leaves, raw material could be anything from fish, fresh water shrimp, mince pork, mushroom or young bamboo shoots mixed with salt, chili, garlic, and “kha”. A smell of grilled banana leaves add with the inside cooked food make it’s irresistible to taste, much better to eat when it’s hot from a stove.
