This little drama played itself out just outside my front door.
I was dishing up my dinner when I heard quite a loud thump at my front door.
When I went out to investigate I saw this pied currawong on my porch, and he saw me
through the security door but he didn't fly off and looked intent on something just
out of sight. It was a badly stunned spotted turtle-dove (Streptopelia chinensis)
which he(?) grabbed and it dragged off the porch.
I thought to myself, 'I have to photograph this!'. I knew this would risk scaring off
the currawong, but I grabbed a camera and ever-so-carefully un-snibbed the door and
moved as stealthily as possible to get into a position where I could get some clear
shots. It wasn't easy as the currawong kept dragging the turtle-dove further away and
finally flew off with it in its beak. I was amazed at how strong these birds are.
The bizarre thing is that I had recently read about currawongs killing crested pigeons
and I didn't quite believe it.
I do now.
These shots were the best I could manage under the circumstances.
