The main army of the Confederacy surrendered on April 9, 1865, only a few days before Lincoln’s assassination. Lincoln visited the Confederate Capital on April 4 and 5, 1865, only days after the Confederate government and military had evacuated the city. This statue, where Lincoln is pictured with his son Tad, was recently erected and was quite controversial. It is located at the National Visitor's Center.
