Dating to 1838, St. Mary's Catholic Church was in the cross hairs of the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War, mostly due to its key location near a railroad depot. Clara Barton worked at the church, and as a result of her experiences here she devised her plan to establish what became the American Red Cross.
