For my money, one of the nicest small towns in Colorado, and located a few miles west of Denver. The village lies along Clear Creek at the edge of the foothills of the Rockies. The village was founded during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush (1859), although the name is in honor of its founder, not the gold that was mined. Golden City was capital of the provisional Territory of Jefferson from 1860 to 1861, and capital of the Territory of Colorado from 1862 to 1867. The prestigious Colorado School of Mines is located here, as well as the Coors Brewing Company, and the Colorado Railroad Museum. Western showman "Buffalo Bill" Cody is buried on Lookout Mountain, just to the west of the vilalge.
