The land of the Springwood estate dates back to a royal land grant in 1697. Part of the house was constructed as early as 1800 in the Federal Style. Franklin Roosevelt's father bought the estate in 1866. In 1915, FDR and his mother made a final enlargement and remodeling of the home. In 1943, FDR donated the estate to the American people.
