Walnut Canyon National Monument

Flagstaff, Arizona

There are some good (but hot) hiking trails in this densely-wooded National Monument southeast of Flagstaff. Walnut Creek has carved out a 600 feet deep canyon into the limestone. In the 12th-13th centuries the resulting caves were used by the Sinagua Indians who constructed cave-dwellings along various levels of the canyon ledges.
