The species of tree that became the fossilized wood still exists in the Southern Hemisphere. During the Triassic Period, this region was located in the tropics. Trees were washed away and buried by layers of sand and volcanic debris. Minerals replaced wood cells over millions of years. The Chinle Rock Formation is the layer in which the petrified wood exists...along with dinosaur-era fossils.
