King Mangrai ruled his Lanna Kingdom from 1261-1296. In 1261 he succeeded his father to become the first independent king of unified Tai city-state in northern Lanna and Laos. The kingdom expanded to the south by alliances and conquests. In 1296 Mengrai moved his capital to his new city of Chiang Mai.
