King Mongkut was a talented amateur astronomer. This was his observatory. Regrettably, on a trip to the area to observe and eclipse he had predicted, he and his son (Prince Chulalongkorn) contracted malaria. As a result, King Mongkut died, but the Prince recovered and ascended to the throne.
