May 30: Scilly pics

Some of my Scilly pics are still in here. Others are somewhere between here and the lab in Kansas. But don't you just love that little leather wrist strap?

Sitting on one of Scilly’s launches, couldn't help but notice the camera straps of a group of guys sitting opposite: NIKON D200, EOS DIGITAL, MINOLTA, FUJI FINEPIX they shouted... Badges of pride worn by serious enthusiasts. The D200 strap in particular stands out. Bold yellow text on black. Nice. HEY EVERYONE, LOOK WHAT I’VE GOT! Very nice. Mug Me straps I call them. Back in the old days, cameras came with nicely made and very discreet plain black straps and they did the job perfectly. But you could buy the branded strap as an extra. If you really felt the need. These days, your shoulders are just a bit more advertising space for huge multinational corporations. Personally, I don’t really like neck straps at all. I have one on the 20D but it’s a nice plain black, non branded affair, and then it’s usually wrapped around my wrist. On my Pentax bodies I have these very nice leather wrist straps hand made by a clever chap in the US. Nope, don’t like branded straps at all. So, fellow photographers, free yourselves of this tyranny and get yourself a plain unbranded strap! But I do like to think that maybe the MINOLTA guy had a Sony Alpha dangling from his strap...

I remember when my friend used a piece of string as a strap for his Pentax MX. Perhaps that was a bit extreme?

I agree with all the branding, though I like the feel of my 30D strap. I'm rather fond of the strap on my K1000. It's a big broad strap, rainbow colors, I bought it way back when. Alas, thin straps are a little uncomfortable for me. I learned early on to 'wrap-the-strap' on my wrist. Saved many a camera that way...

:) Damn now I've got to go out and change my D200 strap!
