Jul 6: Spark

Lurking deep within the garage, behind the Lurker itself, is an old VW engine. A 36bhp (40bhp to my US friends) 1192cc that was in the car when I first saw it. From it's number I can tell it was made between December '63 and July '64, which means it's probably the original engine. This is one of it's spark plugs. It looks pretty good, a sign that it was replaced not so many miles ago, or that the engine is still in good shape. Or both. While I've always been a bit of a hot rodder, there's a little something inside nagging away trying to convince me to put the old engine back in. It needs a good clean, a new exhaust, and possibly a flywheel and generator, but wouldn't it be fun fweeming* down the road in a very shiny 41 year old VW with matching numbers... and while I'm enjoying the slow lane with all of 36bhp, I can be rebuilding the big fast engine bigger and faster!

*fweem: The noise a stock VW engine makes. Rarely heard these days as most VWs have noisy aftermarket exhausts, or rusty old standard pipes.

other sizes: small medium original auto

John selling my `65 VW, is one of those sore subjects that's still nagging at me after nearly 30 years. In fact I don't think I'll go any farther!

David -
Don't forget to contact your American lady motorheads for assistance when you're ready to build that engine!!! Sally would be devastated if you left her out of the picture. Then we can all go fweeming together.

Growing up I remember VWs as one of the few types of compact cars on our American roads. They seemed to be constantly passing us in our Plymouth, in spite of the relativly massive 318 cu in (230hp) engine.
Dad said they had something to prove.
Enjoy your old VW. I'm still mad at Dad for selling that Plymouth.
