Apr 21: Click-zzz-click III

Another shot of my newly serviced Rolleicord Vb.

So, I mentioned the quality of these things. How does a 35 year old camera with a design dating back to 1928 and a lens dating back to 1902 compare to a modern DSLR? I recently had a chance to find out. While I was taking my Golden Gate picture with the Rollei, the one I messed up, Linda was taking a very similar shot with a 10D and 24-85 zoom. EXIF data shows 24mm, 1/60 sec, f16 and ISO 100. A nice clear and sharp picture as you’d expect from that combination. I scanned my neg as a 6000x6000 pixel greyscale image. Although the Rollei scan is very grainy - grain like golf balls - there’s much more detail in the 6x6 neg than Linda’s 6.3Mpx file. Remember this isn’t technically a good neg, the grain is limiting the resolution. My later scans from correctly exposed and processed FP4 show minimal grain. If the current 6-8 mega pixel digital cameras are close to or equal to film quality, we’re only talking about 35mm film. This old classic puts the £1500 DSLR in the shade. That’s the medium format advantage. The 16 megapixel EOS 1DSmk2 might be a closer match, that’ll cost you £5,500 with a 50mm f1.4 lens. That’s approx 36x the price of a 40+ year old Rolleicord Va for sale at Ffordes at the moment. Want 1DSmk2 quality for just £150? Get a Rolleicord, or for a bit more a how about a Rolleiflex 3.5F? But hold on, is a 40 or 50 year camera up to regular use? Certainly - they were built to last and many are still in use. If you can live with just one focal length, and don’t mind taking a little more time over your photography, there’s nothing for the money that’ll beat it. Not as quick or as versatile as a DSLR, but we’re talking about quality. Think your DSLR will still be usable in 50 years?

Pretty camera. I love all the black and chrome. You've got me thinking I should take the Mamiya out for a photographic spin. And get that Plus-X film in my F100 developed.

Yes, you're right on all of this. I'll start keeping an eye out...

medium format still has a huge edge over digi purely from a lens stand point let alone the amount of detail the film can capture, it is the one reason i have a film camera

Bring back the alien guy and the coke! This camera talk makes my brain hurt.

I think I'll have to get out the Rolleicord and warm it up again. I bought it at a garage sale two years ago for $50.00 US. Works just fine except for the slow speed train. I may get that fixed some day. What do you decelope FP-4 in Microphine ?

50 years? My S50 did not even last a year! You can bet that my Olympus XA and MJU will last a lot longer, and if they still make film I will keep using them. Now, where is the phone number of Ffordes, they have a Rolleicord I mean to aquire......

I've got one of these Rolliflex 3.5 and it was, and still is, a great camera.
I've swithched to digital mainly because of the speed factor, and for posting images to the web.
Emailing digital images is so quick and easy it would be hard to go back to film and then scan the images for the electronic world.
I also have 2 old 4x5 view cameras and you really can't beat the quality form a 4x5 neg, but that is very impractical for quick shots.
I'm glad people like you are keeping the art of our trade alive.
I'm going to buy some film and dust off the Nikon F2 and the Rollie and shoot some stuff one day soon.
Thanks for the idea!

Nice shot David. You alone might drive the price of these amazing cameras up with descriptions like that :-)
