The pics came back from the lab. These are from the Olympus ∞Stylus on Fuji Provia 100F. I had the lab leave them unmounted and they look great held up to the window. That's overcast sky in the background, not a lightbox!
So what's the ∞Stylus like? It's a very basic point & shoot. Todd sent this one to me from half way around the world. Think of it as a box Brownie for the 90's. You get a non-zooming 3 element lens, programmed auto exposure, auto flash, autofocus, auto wind and rewind and that's about it. Half press the shutter and green LED confirms that AF has locked, and that's the only info you get. It's a cruel test to shoot it with unforgiving slide film, but the good news is that exposure is spot on in normal low contrast scenes. But like most basic in-camera meters, it will under expose in anything tricky. Evaluative, it aint! The lens is just about sharp enough and has very little distortion, especially when compared to modern digital P&S cameras. Use iso 400 film and in good light it'll no doubt get sharper as it starts to stop down. If you get one free, it's good little pocket camera. If you want to buy one, you can get a Stylus Epic (mju ii) instead for less than a tenner. It has a better lens, a spot meter, a better flash and is even smaller. But that said, an ∞Stylus in the hand is far better camera than a 5D left at home. Thanks Todd!
