May 8: Left behind

After too much wine with John last night, LA and I both feel too rough to drag an SLR around on a trip of to Fowey. So we leave our cameras at home sitting next to each other on the table. Both with 100mm lenses fitted. The differences are few. I have the 100mm f2.0, LA's has the 2.8 macro. LA's is newer and looks factory fresh. Mine has a little paint wear around the shutter release.

Once in Fowey we both regret leaving the cameras behind. Lot's of interesting shots to take. I suggest we buy a couple of disposables, but LA's not interested so we don't bother. Everyone else has cameras. I see a guy with a Nikon D700. Nice bit of kit. He's not seeing the shots I want to make, and misses them too. In fact he's not shooting at all. He has the factory strap and that's that's the only reason I know he has a camera. I hate those straps. Just advertising. My camera's newer / better than your camera. Our Nikon toting friend will just have to upgrade once he starts seeing folks out with D800 straps. I see Canon are playing the same came with the 5Dmk2 straps. Ugggh. Hate 'em. Me, I'm not having any of it. I've taped over the logos and use a plain black strap. While we stop at a cafe for lunch, I see a guy with an EOS500, like the one I've just bought. I bet he paid a lot more than £4.50 though. I had to look hard to see it, so small, especially with the tiny kit lens. He's shooting boats in the harbour. A man walks by with an EOS 300D. You don't see so many of them anymore. Where did they all go? Too much pressure to upgrade. It gets us all in the end. There are lots of P&S digitals. Little glinty silver things, held at arms length, then a puzzled squinty look from it's owner as they struggle to chimp in bright sunlight. I see an elderly lady with a disposable. She's taking a picture of the Cafe we're eating at. I wonder how long 'til she gets to see that picture. As we leave, I see a guy with a D200. He's shooting seagulls, something I feel might work better with a gun! I wonder if he'd seen D700 guy...

Much later on and back at home our cameras haven't been touched. I pick mine up and shoot LA's... Take you cameras with you folks!!

Yes, yes and yes... AND I still leave my camera sometimes... dang!
I replaced/upgraded from my Rebel when the shutter release started to wear out. I couldn't get consistent contact. I didn't realize I'd put that many miles on it.

David, I bet you would love the Panny LX3 or the new Sigma DP2. I have a LX3 and love it, it's actually givin me some fun times with the HD (720p) video feature.

Several day trips we have been on where I would have never considered leaving my 5D at home, no matter how much Abby begged, I have taken the LX3 and been quite happy that 1. I had a camera with me, and 2. that I didn't lug the 5D/lens/tripod around.

Yes, you need a camera for your handbag too! ;O) I have a P&S which goes everywhere with me... bit frustrating using it as opposed to using a DSLR...but it captures the odd moment OK...! ;o)

Lovely story David. That's why I have a handbag camera as well as my DSLR :)
