I am in favor of leaving Texas native fire ants along, at least in Texas. They are not the species that cause the problems. They're generally pretty docile, especially when compared to the imported fire ants.

You can tell them apart by looking at the heads of the largest worker caste. In the Texas species, the heads are disproportionately large. With the imported species, the largest caste look just like big versions of the little ones.
