The island of Zanzibar, on the Swahili Coast, is a blend of African and Arab cultures. During its history it was a trade port for Asian and African goods, including slaves. Also on the island are plantations which grow such spices as cloves and cinnamon.
Zanzibar was a slave trading port from its earliest days. Below is one of two cellars where slaves were held until being sold. The vertical space is only about a meter high, except for the drain at lower right. Notice the chains... Sultan Barghash closed the slave market in 1873.
